Jacques Majorelle (1886-1962) Catalogue of work
Description
Jacques Majorelle (1886-1962) is an emblematic figure of Orientalism. The son of cabinetmaker Louis Majorelle, he trained at the École régionale des beaux-arts in Nancy, then at the Académie Julian in Paris.
From 1908, Majorelle travelled to Spain, Egypt and Italy before settling in Morocco in 1917. There he developed a singular chromatic language that gave him an uninfluenced place among his contemporaries.
Landscapes, souk scenes, portraits, he creates, in Marrakech, where he lived, as well as in the rest of Morocco and on his many trips to Sudan, Guinea and Côte d'Ivoire, a substantial corpus of over 1,000 works, paintings, watercolours, drawings and illustrations in which light, colour and a certain view of the exotic play a decisive role.
This enlarged, richly illustrated new edition looks back at the artist's career. All the works are presented, accompanied by biographical and bibliographical notes.
