Fascinée par les animaux, elle avait rassemblé autour d'elle, au château de By, dans la forêt de Fontainebleau, une véritable ménagerie : vivaient en semi-liberté, vaches, moutons, chèvres, chevaux, chiens, chats, poules, canards et divers animaux sauvages, biches, cerfs, sangliers, daims, isards, mouflons, un couple de singes et même des lions durant quelques années. Rosa Bonheur, painter of animals The first woman artist to be awarded the Légion d'honneur, she left an abundant body of work, which bears witness to an exceptional vision of the living world. Fascinated by animals, she had gathered around her, at the Château de By, in the forest of Fontainebleau, a veritable menagerie: cows, sheep, goats, horses, dogs, cats, chickens, ducks and various wild animals, deer, wild boar, fallow deer, isards, mouflons, a couple of monkeys and even lions for a few years.
