« À gauche toute, bon Dieu ! » Ce sous-titre du présent volume de ces Mémoires ne doit pas être pris comme une réaction d'ordre rhétorique à la triste conjoncture du printemps 2002. Dès 1998, l'appel avait été lancé par l'auteur, non pas comme simple défi à une droite alors déliquescente, mais d'abord comme une impatiente exhortation faite à une gauche dont la pluralité l'empêche d'aller assez loin, mais aussi en direction d'une Église si souvent indigne de son Dieu. À vrai dire, ce qui va sans doute ressortir du rapprochement de l'«autre siècle» pourtant à peine effleuré ici, c'est l'insupportable parallélisme entre ce qu'un siècle, sur sa fin, a tout fait pour cacher et ce que le suivant n'a encore aujourd'hui rien fait pour reconnaître...»--'To the left, all of you, by God!'
